"Millions saw the apple fall, but only Newton asked why." That's the power of curiosity. This cognitive state gears up when we are growing, and after a certain time, starts to go downhill2. This is because schools today are standardizing students. Technology can make us rise above that. Technology can be used to arouse curiosity because it is fresh, exhilarating and unpredictable.
"I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious."
What beautiful lines these are! And true indeed, for nothing drives a person more than the curiosity in his/her mind. Look where it got Albert Einstein! But inconsistent and ever altering are these times, and today we have come to a standstill. A place where innovation and curiosity is praised and applauded, but is no more cherished. Where have they been? Or have they submersed into oblivion?
The reason we stress so much on curiosity is because the root of creativity lies in curiosity and creativity drives the engine of this world. Does it not? Leo Burnett said that, “Curiosity about life in all of its aspects, I think, is the secret of great creative people.”
We couldn't agree more. But what's happening in the present is, in its very own way, dreadful. Ironically, we are manufacturing robots who can think, and people who can't. Today, children are taught how to stick to the routine from the age of 4, as soon as they enter school. In this vibrant age of technology, they are taught in the same way that the class that sat there 4 years ago was taught. But, schools are now aware of these discrepancies and are trying to take appropriate measures.
According to a research by Susan Engel, a Psychology lecturer in Williams College, a school and its environment play a vital role in the development of curiosity in a person. Hence according to us, it's important that curiosity, and not the tedium of iteration, environs students.
Technology seems to be the apt solution for this problem. Technology has the ability to open up the minds of students to the surreal world that we witness. And by technology, we mean not just the tools which can be used in the classroom. Technology here refers to the ways which can change the environment a student lives in. They should be able to use and experience technology than see computers installed on a table. They should be transacting using it, they should be communicating using it, and they should be learning from it and making use of it wherever possible!
First step towards building this idea is inculcating technology in classroom and changing what is being taught. Help them develop their creativity. Mold them such that they can grow up and become a irreplaceable part of this world.
Secondly, it's not just about what is being taught, it's about how it is being taught. Edgar Dale famously said that “We remember 10% of what we read, 20% of what we hear, 30% of what we see, 50% of what we see and hear, 70% of what we discuss with others, 80% of what we personally experience, 95% of what we teach others”.
Start inculcating technology in your everyday classes and become unpredictable. This way students will be excited to study, and new tools and activities will keep school studying interactive and fun. Binding them to books and notebooks will limit them. Let them taste the vastness of internet and applications. Let them know that there is a world that has no limits and a map is nothing but a mere paper. Bring the paper live using technology!
The next step is to integrate technology in the school system. This will create an environment that is tech friendly. If you are only going to inculcate technology in the classrooms, the students are going to be deprived of what technology actually is and what it is like to see it around you.
Promoting online programs is another way to promote learning. This way students can learn something that is out of the course and something they love. When students start to explore something that interests them, the start becoming more and more curious about that particular subject.E-learning is rapidly increasing and is expected to continue to increase for the coming years.
EdTech is the future of education and there's no denying it. It is going to drive the wheel of creativity and technology. And it is indeed the pen and paper of this world.
